Before vasectomy
- Read the FAQ and be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with Dr Isacksen
- Carefully shave the front part of the scrotum starting with the base of the penis
- Avoid aspirin for a week before the procedure
- Shower and cleanse the area the night before or the morning of the procedure
- Eat a light meal
- Wear supportive undergarment like compression shorts or athletic supporter
After vasectomy
Day of procedure
- Head right home, rest flat for the day
- Up around the house as needed, but limit activity
- Wear the supportive garment for 48 hours
- Apply ice pack to the area for a few minutes on/ few minutes off as needed for comfort
- Use Tylenol or ibuprofen for discomfort, follow instructions on the container
- Mild discomfort expected , call for severe pain or swelling larger than an egg
Next 2 days
- May shower, walk a bit, run errands as needed including driving
- No yard work, lifting more than 30 lbs, or sports
- Wear supporter, ice as needed, Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed
- Sedentary work (desk)
Third day
- Return to work, light exercise, supporter/ice/meds as needed
- Gradually increase the intensity of workouts, take a week to get back to full exertion
Sex
Wait 5-7 days, or longer if you are still sore.
Remember you are not sterile, you must use birth control until your sample has been checked.
Sample check
After 12 weeks you will be asked to drop off a sample that you collect at home in the container provided.
We will give you printed instructions and the container along with a sealable baggie for transport to the office.
Samples can only be accepted on days we are in the clinic. You will be given instructions about when to bring the sample.
Once we have given the all clear, you can resume sex without birth control
